Books, Links and News

I've been reading some great stuff I wanted to get in front of you, and I've updated and expanded my links.

On the right, you'll notice a link to Wallace Stroby's Gone 'Til November, a thriller from the great Minotaur Books author responsible for Barbwire Kiss and Heartbreak Lounge. The New York Times wrote that Wallace is "writing with such fierce originality that he rejuvenates genre conventions." Gone 'Til November is his newest, out this month, and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Just got back from Phoenix, and met with the excellent Keith Rawson, whose CrimeFactory site should be up any day, and met Patrick Millikin at The Poisoned Pen, an excellent mystery/crime bookstore in Scottsdale that draws the best writers in crime for personal appearances and signings.

At Poisoned Pen I picked up a copy of the new Phoenix Noir, edited by Patrick, and it's filled with the kind of solid writing always associated with the City Noir series. My favorite story so far - "It's Like a Whisper" by Megan Abbott, a fictionalized re-imagining of the death of TV actor Bob Crane. The story is beatiful, dreamlike and deeply disturbing, like all of Megan's work. If you don't know Megan's Bury Me Deep, one of the most highly-praised crime novels of the year, you have to check it out.

I'm actually in a rare lull in appearances, with nothing scheduled for the next month. I'm in the middle of writing novel number three, which I'm calling Black Horse Pike, and plotting a series of events with my Liars Club pals. We'll probably be doing some panels or readings at local libraries, and certainly welcome inquiries from interested librarians, bookstores, book clubs, etc.
